Today I would like to write about homophones. Homophones are words that sound the same, however they are spelled differently and have different meanings. The only ways to know which homophone is intended is by seeing it in writing, or by understanding it through context. This is one of the reasons that reading and writing are important skills to develop.

For example, the words 'flour' and 'flower' sound the exact same. If you see the word in writing, you can see the difference. If it is spoken, you must assess the context to gain understanding as to which homophone is intended.

Some other examples of homophones are:

-there, their, they're.

-won, one.

-sun, son.

-hear, here.

-deer, dear.

-eight, ate.

-bean, been.

-to, too, two.
