Sloh – A book review

Exciting, mysterious and wonderfully written, I thoroughly enjoyed Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, the first book in a young adult fantasy duology. The story is set in the bustling city of Ketterdam, the centre of international trade. It follows a group of youthful outcasts and criminals as they begin a dangerous heist that could change their lives forever.

The book opens with a main character Kaz Brekker, a cunning and fearless thief known as "Dirtyhands," who is offered a chance at a deadly and impossible heist with the promise of a reward that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. However, he can’t do it alone so he assembles a crew of six dangerous outcasts, each with unique skills including the sharpshooter Jesper, the acrobatic spy Inej, the Grisha Nina, the convict Matthias, and the explosives expert Wylan. Together, they must rescue a valuable prisoner from the heavily guarded Ice Court. As they go through the dangerous streets of Ketterdam and face frightening enemies, each member of the team must confront their inner demons and past traumas.

One of the things I liked best about the book was that the story was filled with suspense, unexpected twists, and action, keeping the readers on the edge of their seats. I liked that the author did not portray the characters as heroes but as villains. She also showed not only their bad sides but also their good ones. My only criticism of the book is that there were a few words in the book where the characters spoke in their own language created by the author and these parts were not translated, so I didn't know what it was about.

All in all, if you’re a fan of fantasy, thrilling heist stories, you’ll love this. And if you’re not, I would still recommend it because Leigh Bardugo weaves together elements of magic, mystery, and suspense to create a stunning story that keeps readers in tension from beginning to end.
